wreck one's car

When you say 'I wrecked my car', do you mean the accident was severe and your car was almost totalled?

Does 'I had a car crash' sound like the damage was less considerable?

Top answer

Wrecked means totally unusable afterwards. Car crash might also mean that or might mean something less serious. It still sounds quite serious though and as though it involved another vehicle.

  • If I just reversed into a fence and dented my car I wouldn't call it a car crash.

As usual, I agree with Nona.

You can say you got into a car accident, which might not be too serious. (Of course, if you modify the accident with something like "horrible," you've made it serious.) But that might be the "in-between" word you're looking for.
