Would/will

Are both OK? What's the difference here: I know that he's someone who would always have my back.

VS

I know that he's someone who will always have my back.

Which one would a native speaker say? I think on TV I heard someone use would.

levis1 I think on TV I heard someone use would. And next week you'll hear someone on TV use 'will'. They are both correct, and they both make sense.

  • levis1 I think on TV I heard someone use would.
  • And next week you'll hear someone on TV use 'will'.
  • They are both correct, and they both make sense.
  • 'will' is more definite; it shows a more confident belief in what is said; there is no doubt in the speaker's mind about it.
  • You could almost say that in this pair of sentences, 'would' means 'very probably will' or 'is almost certain to'.
