(a) Mary insisted on carrying all her luggage. She wouldn't let me help her.
(b) Mary insisted on carrying all her luggage. She wouldn't allow me to help her.
(c) Mary insisted on carrying all her luggage. She wouldn't have me help her.
(d) Mary insisted on carrying all her luggage. She wouldn't get me to help her.
I think that some of the four sentences above are probably okay, but some sound very strange to native speakers. Please evaluate each sentence. Besides, if you don't mind, could you tell me why?
Top answer
Some are no doubt more common than others ((a) is probably the most common, (c) and (d) less so), but I wouldn't describe any of them as "strange".
