Would you understand this?

Context:

A man is moving down an aisle of cubicles looking for someone who's hiding.

The sentence:

Suddenly he heard a sound and turned to see a lamp dangling from a desk.

Questions:

Is this sentence correct? Would you understand it? Or should I rephrase to make it more clear? If so, could you help me do so?

Thank you in advance.

If a lamp is dangling, it's typically dangling from the ceiling, so "a lamp dangling from a desk" is difficult to interpret. Does a little elf work under the desk, making a light necessary under the desk? I suppose the lamp is attached to the underside of the desk?
