Would you proofread my question?

Hi teachers,
This is the context:
What’s happening to this country?’ she said. ‘I don’t know. I didn’t like the old President.
Assuming that 'she' is Marta, which one is better? Are both of them correct?
a) Did Marta know what was taking place in her country? No, she didn't.
b) Does Marta know what is taking place in her country? No, she doesn't.

Thanks in advance.

  • Both are correct.
  • Using the present and present progressive tenses in example B just takes you and your audience back to that time, making it "now".
  • It can make it seem more "real", but I would suggest you be consistent with whichever style you choose throughout your discussion.

What is happening in a country is different from what is happening to it. Marta was expressing dismay about some change in the country's overall tenor, but that does not mean that she does not know about current events.

Hi Shawn,
Thank you so much for your help and for the advice on this one too.

Hi ennon,
Thank you for your reply. I haven't seen that possibility at all. Yes, somehow she is expressing alarm about the country's situation.
