Would you please tell me why there shouldn't be a comma before "and?"

This is a paraphrase of a sentence that I got wrong on another site. I put a comma after "country" assuming that I was connecting two independent clauses. The comma was removed when I submitted the answer. Isn't "we spent almost four hours on various topics" an independent clause? Thank you.

Last December, James Jones attended a business meeting in Florida to discuss exports to his country and we spent almost four hours on various topics.

wcuth The comma was removed when I submitted the answer. Are you saying that the computer removed the comma? If so, it overstepped its bounds.
