Would you please correct the following sentence?
"In many studies the root cause of a decrease in old drivers' performance is considered to be their cognitive characteristics rather than being their muscle and motor functions."

It doesn't seem quite right to me to speak of a decrease in performance. Performance does not get bigger or smaller. And it doesn't seem right to say eg the cause is their cognitive characteristics.

I'd say eg "In many studies the root cause of an increase in accidents caused by old drivers
