Motivation Letter

I am applying to KTH for the master of Materials Science and Engineering, particularly I prefer the specialization: materials and process design. Presently I am a senior student at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, my major is material processing and controlling.

Since the course An Introduction to Discipline lectured by several leading professors in our department, I have cherished the constant aspiration of becoming an engineer in material science. They showed me a magic material world and imparted me the notion that new materials made dreams come true. In addition to regular coursework, I actively participated in a project called “rapid prototyping with Motoman NX100 robots”, in which we combined additive and subtractive techniques to build parts that have been proved difficult to manufacture using conventional machining. Without off-line programming system, we used teach mode. Without professional cooling system, we used a drilled copper plate. Without milling machine, we refitted one robot. We encountered numerous problems, but we combated them patiently. While this project turned to be a failure due to the insufficient stiffness of the refitted robot, nevertheless it taught me to preserve in times of adversity and motivated to my dream.

The another incentive of my pursuit of knowledge in this field is the accomplishment of a three-view drawing for a double-reduction gear box with Auto CAD at the end of my fourth term. It is currently effortless for me. But at that time I did savor an initial sense of achievement which reinforced my determination to seek a research career in material engineering. Because I was totally a rookie of Auto CAD before I started the assignment and eventually obtained a relatively superior quality and high score.

Realizing that undergraduate studies had only exposed me to the relatively fundamental knowledge of this subject, I embarked on a Master’s program. Moreover, China tends to lag behind western countries in scientific and technological development in the field of material engineering by many years, so studying further abroad is a wise choice. Fortunately, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in KTH offers a unique environment. I have known from the Internet that many members of your teaching faculty are international renowned specialists and are at the very front line of research.

From the prospective master-period study in KTH I hope I can solidify and broaden my knowledge of several processes those turn raw materials into final, useful products adapted to human needs. I hope I can receive promising career prospects both in academic and industry. Extensive experiments I performed and long hours of researching I conducted afforded me a solid foundation of material engineering. A wide knowledge of professional software, such as ANSYS, UG NX4.0, Auto CAD, InteCAST CAD, etc. and a inter-discipline curriculum such as Foundation of Material Forming Theory, Material Processing Engineering, Heat Transfer, etc. have provided me with basis for further study as a graduate student in your research-intense programs. Maybe I am not familiar with the Metallurgy and Ceramics, but I have confidence to conquer the challenge.

China is a developing country with an enormous potential in the manufacturing. To serve the needs of this developing industry, material engineering is going to be of utmost importance. Thus conditions here are very conducive to supplement my aspirations when I return after completing my graduate studies.
