Last week, European leaders met in Berlin in the midst of tension in the EU. There are many reasons behind this tension- rampant corruption in Greece, their lack of responsibility, and the rigidity of European Union. However, it is not just economic problems the EU is faced with. They are having identity conflicts. The system of European Union looked appealing to many people only when it was prospering. When, however, it began to collapse, people too started to see the problems of this system. If the EU falls apart, countries in Europe would identify themselves nationally. Then, people would become reluctant to help bail out other European countries with their tax money. People would not only stigmatize each other but take hostile action against each other. These actions are very often seen in most ethnic conflicts. Currently, Germany and Greece are at odds- Germans want Greece out of the EU while experts are saying the exit of Greece would lead to an economic disaster. But some Germans with a cosmopolitan view think it is better Greece be in the EU. But still, the economic and ethnic crisis in Europe is producing more and more extremists, and the relationship among European countries is getting worse.
