Hi.

What is the difference between a crocodile and an alligator?

Alligators and crocodiles have always been the cause of confusion among ordinary people; while these reptiles look the same at the first glance, there are several important distinctions when a closer look is taken. Generally speaking, there are three main families in the Crocodilia order: the Crocodylidae family, Alligatoridae (caimans and alligator as member), and the Gavialidae family (with just gharials as members). As their names suggest, alligators and crocodiles belong to the Alligatoridae and Crocodylidae families respectively. Accordingly, there are differences between them in terms of appearance and physical characteristics. First of all, it's the snout of the two species that is more noticeable. Crocodiles have V-shaped snouts that are narrower than those of alligators. On the contrary, alligators have wide, U-shaped snouts. Second, the jaws of these two animals are of different structures. Alligators have wider upper jaws that make for a great place for the lower teeth to hide. With this in mind, an alligator is normally seen with the teeth of the upper jaw along the lower jaw line. In contrast, crocodiles have upper and lower jaws of the same width along which interlocking teeth are set. They also have a large fourth tooth that sticks out from the lower jaw and goes into a kind of depression behind the nostrils when the animal's mouth is closed. Based on these differences, alligators pack more power in their jaw and have better capability to deal with harder objects. Next, the color of the animals differs in an easy-to-notice way. The crocodile normally has an olive brown coloration on its skin whilst the alligator has almost a dark appearance. Another important difference between alligators and crocodiles stems back to their habitats. As a matter of fact, crocodiles have lingual salt glands that allow them to feel more comfortable in salt water than alligators. However, they both can live in places with slow moving rivers that have grasslands at the sides. In conclusion, alligators and crocodiles are the most important family members of the Crocodilia order. They almost have the same anatomy that brings about trouble to the untrained eye to distinguish between them. Needless to say, they are very powerful and dangerous reptiles, so humans should be very careful when encountered one of them.
