Hi.

What are the most difficult aspects of learning English?

There are some problems in the journey of learning any language, and English as the most spoken language by non-native speakers is no exception. English learners usually face some difficulties to learn the language which some of them will be discussed in the following. First of all, learners usually have the problem of getting familiarized with the texture of the new language; they are used to their own native language and can't easily change their mindset towards English. As a result, when an expression is uttered, it is usually a word-by-word translation from the first language into English which is far from natural native English. Secondly, learners have difficulty to cope with the idiomatic expressions in English that is mostly found in spoken English. It is has been seen that some advanced learners have deep problems with understanding English native speakers due to the wide range of idioms used by the native speakers. Finally, picking up a good accent in English seems to be problematic for almost all of the English learners. The problem gets even worse when some sounds in English can't be found in the first language. For example, there are no sounds like '?' or 'ð' in the Persian language, and some advanced learners still have difficulties with pronouncing these sounds withing the English words. In conclusion, difficulties with learning English are mostly caused due to the nature of the language which is different from one's first language, and on the other hand, accent and producing the correct pronunciations appear difficult oftentimes. However, the extent of the difficulty may vary according to the closeness of the first language to English.
