Hi.

The pyramids of Egypt have withstood the ravages of time and weather, which 35 of them are still recognizable. The pyramids were actually regarded as burial places for then royal families and especially pharaohs. The ancient Egyptians passionately believed in afterlife. In their opinion, if one's body was preserved from decay, the soul would be immortal. Based on this belief, they had their corpses mummified and had some of their most precious possessions buried with them. Although they thought the eye-catching tombs would protect them from the robbers, most of them were broken into and robbed.

The pyramids were originally developed from some flat-topped rectangles called "the mastaba" which gradually evolved into the pyramids. It was in the course of the First and Second Dynasties(3100-2655 B.C.E) that the mastabas were built and used as burial places. And from the Third Dynasty(2664-2615), the typical pyramids got taken shape. They were called "step pyramids" because they were in fact an upward extension of a series of the mastabas. Imhotep was the architecture of the step pyramid that was first built for Kings Zoser. The main difference between the King Zoser's step pyramid and the ones made later was that the step pyramid was never covered with stone to give it a smooth surface.

The Fourth Dynasty(2614-2502) was the crest period of the development of the pyramids. The three gigantic pyramids that we see today among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World were built during this period. They are called the pyramids of Giza because they are located near the town of Giza outside Cairo. The largest of these pyramids is known as the Great Pyramid. It was built for King Khufu, which was also called Cheops by the Greeks. The Khufu's pyramid with its base of 5.3 hectares is large enough to hold ten football fields. It was originally 147 meters high, but the top then meters are missing today. King Khafre's pyramid is smaller than the Great Pyramid, and King's Mankaure's pyramid is the smallest of the three pyramids. These pyramids are the best preserved of all the pyramids of the ancient Egypt. It is thought today that at least 100,000 people, or better to say slaves, worked to build any single pyramid.

However, after the Fourth Dynasty, the construction of the pyramids started to lose its popularity among pharaohs since they offered little or even no protection for the dead kings and nobles and for their possessions against grave robbers. Eventually, King Thutmose I ended the custom of building pyramids and decided to sacrifice publicity for protection in the construction of his House of Eternity. He ordered to bury his embalmed body and his possessions in an underground tomb in a valley far from Cairo and the Nile River. His example was welcomed by the following kings so that all of them abandoned above-ground tombs. However, even those underground tombs in the Valley of the Kings didn't survive the attacks of the grave robbers. All in all, the construction of the mighty pyramids will go on living as a symbol of the power of ancient Egypt civilization.
