Expectations play a determining role in the result of what people achieve. Expectations can prevent individuals from receiving what they really deserve. On the other hand, if they are controlled appropriately, people will be able to do their best in every situation.
However, expectations differ from person to person, and that's why we see people with different opinions about the same topic as a result of different expectations. The negativity of expectations could be catastrophic. It happens when people think too much of the result of their work, instead of focusing on the real time of performing the job. Even worse, concentrating too hard could end up in a condition called " focal dystonia," which is an abnormal muscle function.
Robert Stevens, as a psychiatrist, explains that concentrating on goals profoundly will result in missing the opportunity to give your attention to the focal point of the work you are doing. Dan Jansen could be considered a good example to mention in this regard. This American speed skater had passed three past Olympics without any result. He had been nearly written off by the most fans in the fourth Olympics. There was just one more stage for him to compete in; he didn't expect to win any medal at that very last time. Maybe that mood of desperation allowed him not to think about the result and helped him focus on his job which finally brought him his first gold medal at his last experience in the Olympics.
In conclusion, it is highly recommended that we hope for things, and not to expect a specific desired result. If you try too hard to accomplish, the result may not be what you want, or what you really could achieve.

As a person from medical field, I have to say it's better to leave out "focal dystonia" part. You don't get that condition simply by conentration too much. It is caused by brain trauma or in some cases, genetic.
