Is Money a Means for Political Power?
Many people say that money is not everything. Some individuals think money is not power, and similarly some politicians assume that money has not too much of an impact on political power. However, I believe money is a fundamental means for political power: it can effect election, influence political decisions, and help officials stay in power.
Rich candidates usually win the election. For they are able to afford a great advertising campaign. In 2016, for instance, despite all qualifications, Bashar-dost did not win the election since he was lacking a good advertising budget. However, Ashraf Ghani won the election, because he was advertising very heavily, in the press, in the newspaper, on the internet—everywhere.
Well- off politicians can easily influence political decisions made by the government. To give you an example of what I mean, think of Islamic Party (Hezbi Isalami) and Afghan Millat Party. In 1978 when the Afghanistan wanted to attack Pakistan, Islamic Party was succeeded to prevent the government from attacking Pakistan spending a big amount of money. While on the other hand, Afghan Millat Party was defending the government policy, but since it did not have adequate amount of money to take sufficient actions, Afghan Millat Party could not persuade the government to maintain its policy.
Money helps, corrupt, officials stay in power. That is to say they donate candidates to win the election so that they will cooperate with them in some ways. Or, they would a large amount of money on their campaign advertising and buying voters … to stay in power.
To make the long story short, as a politician you tremendously need money to do big things, particularly if you wish to win the election, make some big political decisions, or maintain your political power. Are there bigger things a politician can do with money?
