Hi.

Compare and contrast the ancient Egyptian and Chinese view of life after death and preparation for the afterlife.

People in ancient civilizations believed in the afterlife and spent much time to prepare for it. In this regard, Egyptians and Chinese had grand civilizations in the ancient times and had many similar and different views of the afterlife. The way in which the corpses were buried and how the person would go on living in the underworld is the heart of the likenesses and distinctions between the views of the two old nations about life after death.

To begin with, the most important difference between the view of ancient Chinese and Egyptians about afterlife was about the preservation of the dead body. The Egyptian people strongly believed that a rebirth after life would only be possible if the corpse was preserved from decay. Accordingly, they removed the internal organs of the dead body and applied some special chemicals on it to ensure a long preservation. This process was called mummification. In contrast, ancient Chinese didn't believe in such process. They simply buried the corpse and, at times, they burnt the dead body of the dead.

Next, the way the two ancient nations prepared for the afterlife can be the cause of difference. Ancient Egyptians were in favor of making complex structures and statues for their house of eternity that somehow represented their deep religious beliefs. For example they made masks of the dead person out of the coffin. They also believed that the coffin and the stone burial tombs should be rectangular. By contrast, ancient Chinese were not of the opinion of making such complex religious burial places. Instead, if possible, they tried to make burial places that would be as similar to their earthly possessions as possible. For example, Qin Shihuang, the first emperor of chine, planned his mausoleum to be a micro cosmic replica of his capital city.

On the other hand, there are also similarities concerning how the two ancient civilizations viewed the afterlife. First of all, they both thought of death as a continuation of life on earth. Accordingly, they both wanted to take their earthly precious possessions along to the other world. Moreover, once, they had the custom of having their servants put to death to serve them in the afterlife. With this in mind, both ancient Chinese and Egyptian people were interested in constructing strong and secret places to protect their treasures. They also wanted their afterlife to have the same quality as the one in this world.

As a final thought, while the old civilizations of China and Egypt share the same main perspectives about the afterlife, they have also some differences about the details and how to prepare for the afterlife. However, they have both made great rich histories for our modern world.
