Topic: Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.

Discuss both views and give your own opinions.

In recent years, it has become far more normal for people to learn a foreign language. However, the learners have different views about the aims to start a new language. Although some believe that the only purpose is traveling or working abroad, others consider that other various reasons are equally significant.

It is undeniable that the majority of people study the language for traveling purposes. Indeed, language is definitely a perfect tool for people to exchange information, especially to manage potential trouble in a certain country where its residents use their mother tongue as a whole. For example, getting lost the way is a prevalent problem that many tourists face. If the visitors do not know the language in that country or even English, they will unable to get the right way for their itinerary, which impacts a lot on traveling. With regard to working purposes, this is an acceptable reason for those who have the ambition to earn more money and to change their life in another country, therefore, language is a prerequisite for this reason. In fact, being good at language will help people to easily adapt to a new working environment and gradually become native in this new place.

Nevertheless, various other reasons to learn a foreign language are just as significant as the purposes mentioned above. Particularly, study a new language will help our brain to do exercise. This means that while using a language which is not our mother tongue, the brain has to use more energy to work in transforming foreign language into a native one, leading to constant operation. By frequently doing this, our brain gradually gets strong, which results in the reduction of losing mental function. Furthermore, learning a new language will help learners to know obviously about its country as well as its culture, which helps people to widen social knowledge.

In conclusion, traveling or working abroad is not the only target to study a foreign language. Personally, I believe that there are more possible reasons which depend on individuals’ purposes
