Would you mind if...

With 'Would' clause, I know we use past tense in 'if' clause. But, can I still say 'Would you mind if I don't join you tonight?" Grammatically, it has to be 'didn't according to my grammar ref book, however 'don't' sounds more correct to me. What would you say?
