Nowadays, not enough students choose science subjects in university in many countries. What are the reasons for this problem? What are the effects on society?

In several parts of the word, there is currently a lack of students choosing to study science in universities and colleges. There are several reasons behind this tendency and I would argue that it has adverse impacts on society.

There are two fundamental factors why science subjects were typically neglected by students in colleges. Firstly, these subjects are tricky which require proficient calculation ability. Students sometimes immerse themselves for hours to do a math problem but the solution is still wrong, making them strained and daunted. For example, my friend changed his major from physics to journalism because he felt stressed after consecutively failing his calculation-required exams. Secondly, in several societies, it is difficult for science students to find specialized jobs after graduation. For instance, in African developing countries, people are more inclined to agriculture-related subjects than math or chemistry because very few firms recruit employees specializing in science.

A shortage of learners in the fields of science could result in some adverse effects on society. The lack of students in this area means that there would be fewer future engineers and scientists. This tendency might slow down technological development, indirectly reducing the quality of human life. Additionally, while other majors such as business or economics become prevalent, there would be a disparity in the number of graduates who choose these fields and those who study science. As a result, competition at work significantly increases because there is a wide range of graduates with the same expertise, causing some of them to the brink of unemployment.

In conclusion, it is inevitable that there are several causes of a lack of learners in science subjects in universities, and the phenomenon also comes along with a myriad of negative effects, which should be thoroughly taken into account by both society and individuals.
