I THINK that sentence means that all ACROSS THE MOUNTAIN, ROCKS SPLIT in half (or into pieces).
In other words, there were lots of rocks, all over (across) the mountain, and when the priest spoke the magic formula, these rocks SPLIT, i.e. cracked and broke into pieces.
