Would you explain about " do yourself a favor"?

Would you explain about " do yourself a favor"?
Generally knowing it. It means good expression example as " Can you do me a favor?"
, by finding it in a dictionary It could be used as ironical expression of " What are you talking about!!!!No way!!!"

Q1. In fact , I didn't come to my mind why it could be used like that. Could you explain why?

Q2 . I'mn't sure it can be used in the below lines as a ironical expression. Just advise me.

The lines go like :

It means that you will save yourself a lot of trouble and get the same outcome.

I couldn't understand logically when I read the above sentense . If that were written like this that "you will save(=prevent,keep) yourself a lot of troubles, you get the better outcome." but...
Maybe I am missing something ...
