The emergent try to get as much sunlight as possible by spreading their branches as possible. The next group is lianas and these are a type of climbing plant. They use the trees to climb to the top of the canopy to get sunlight that they need. The third group is the epiphytes, which grow directly on or attached to the trees. They get the sunlight that they need and nutrients that come from the other plants.
