Would you correct my English? (Oct.7)

Hello. I wrote two dialogues. Would you check them?

No. 1

M: Do you believe in ghosts?

F: Of course. I've seen them many times.

M: Really? Aren't you afraid of them?

F: Never. I'm used to seeing them.

No. 2

F: Hi, welcome home. Dinner's almost ready.

M: Wow, that's really sweet of you. It smells good.

What's ( on the menu ) for dinner?

F: Nothing special, but humberger steak and French fries.

( Q. Should we say "steaks"? )

Thank you! kenta

I'd say "hamburger steaks," although I'm not sure what they are. "Welcome home" would not be normal in this case, unless a friend or relative is speaking, and has prepared the meal. Generally, it would only be appropriate for a member of the household to welcome someone to a home.

  • In this case, it sounds to me like both parties are members of the household, and would therefore be on more intimate terms than is suggested by "welcome home," which is rather formal.
  • I've seen cases where a number of relatives staged a surprise "welcome home" party in the person's home, when he had been away for a long time.
