Would you check the following sentence for errors please?

"In order to explore the heterogeneity and understanding the effects of factors on the estimated effect size, several subgroup analyses were carried out."

You lose me at "understanding". After a plain noun, "heterogeneity", the participle form is puzzling. Also, "effects of factors" is hollow, "effect size" is not instantly understandable, and "subgroup analyses" might be better spelled out as (if I understand it) "analyses were carried out upon several subgroups", because they are not analyses that are subgroup.
