would + verb vs verb

a) It was the farthest east the Nazis ever reached, and they would be retreating until 1945, when the Soviets captured Berlin.

b) It was the farthest east the Nazis ever reached, and they retreated until 1945, when the Soviets captured Berlin.

Can someone explain why a would be used instead of b? Thanks

And would it make more sense to say '... would ever reach, and they would be retreating until...'?
