Would the meaning be different?

Ronin Shimizu, 12, died last Wednesday, but police are not releasing other details about the death.

He was a former pupil at Folsom Middle School in Folsom, California.

Would the meaning of the second sentence be different if 'former' were removed from it.

Thanks.
