Would somebody recommend a good novel to read?

A Detective novel or a SciFi novel is preferred.

Snow Crash is my favorite novel, it uses a lot of slang, though, so may be a bit difficult. The classic detective novels are written by Dashiell Hammett, anything by him is a good example of noir detective.

How about science-fiction detective novels? Some that I have enjoyed are "Illegal Alien" by Robert J. Saywer, and a trilogy by Isaac Asimov beginning with "Caves of Steel."

I haven't read Illegal alien, I'll try it out.
Isn't Asimov known for the Foundation series?
