Would somebody recommend a good novel to read?

Snow Crash is my favorite novel, it uses a lot of slang, though, so may be a bit difficult.

The classic detective novels are written by Dashiell Hammett, anything by him is a good example of noir detective.

If you don't mind science fiction leaning toward fantasy, there is also Anne McCaffrey. If you don't mind paranormal mystery, Tanya Huff's Blood books are good (about a police officer turned PI for health reasons and a vampire) and also Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden's series, but the Dresden books are set in a dark fantasy world with a mystery plotline. Sharon Shinn writes some great sci-fi. I also suggest David Weber, David Drake, John Ringo and many, many others. My all time favorite writer is Lois McMaster Bujold. She has written some fantasy, but she is known for her science fiction. She wrote the Vorkosigan series, which are sci-fi miltary stories. I started the Vorkosigan series with Shards of Honor. But you could start with either that or The Warrior's Apprentice, which introduces Miles Vorkosigan, a hyperkinetic military genius with bones of glass. Shards of Honor stars Mile's parents and explains how he got his bones of glass (Mile's physical deformities are particularly hard on him, because his world used to kill all babies that were born deformed and such infanticide goes on in remote places during his own life and the prejudice againest disabled people makes his own life very hard). All of the other Vorkosigan books have Miles Vorkosigan.
You can pick up nearly any Baen book, because they publish a lot of science fiction. Baen publishes many of the writers I have metioned here. To get a better idea, you could visit their free library. http://www.baen.com/library/defaultTitles.htm A lot of writers I metioned here have work up and you can read them at no charge. Baen is only publisher that allowes its books to be put up on the web for free.

The Lois McMaster Bujold story the Baen library has is a short story called The Mountains of Mourning. It is a mystery about an infanticide. Miles is just back from the miltary academy.

How about science-fiction detective novels?  Some that I have enjoyed are "Illegal Alien" by Robert J. Saywer, and a trilogy by Isaac Asimov beginning with "Caves of Steel."
