Would saying this be correct?

Living in this world for the past 17 years I’ve found 3 things come to my mind when I hear the word ‘religion’: thing1, thing2, thing 3

Should I really add a colon after religion?

am new to this so any help appreciated

have neever really been good at writing

Colons precede lists so you're fine with it here. I would replace the comma between thing 2 and thing 3 with 'and'.
