Would (remote)

One option is for a router to keep a list of all computers and all the paths to them. The router would then decide how to forward data packets based on this reference table. Packets would be forwarded based on the IP address of the destination computer. This option would become difficult as more users were added to the network. Scalability is introduced when the router keeps a list of all networks, but leaves the local delivery details to the local physical networks. In this situation, the routers pass messages to other routers. Each router shares information about its connected network.
1. This option would become difficult as more users were added to the network.(I don't understand this line here. I can't tell if this is a contional statemen or not. Is 'would' here a conditonal or is it is used to make the sentence sound less immediate? Is 'were' past tense, or part of the conditional?)

Thanks.

"were" just helps to indicate a completed action. It wouldn't become difficult until more users ARE added? In that case use "WON'T"

So it is a conditional?

Thanks.

Depends on how you look at the meaning of "conditional" relative to the sentence.

IF the number of users reached a certain point, THEN this option would become difficult.
AS doesn't necessarily mean IF. As long as it is still sunny, I will go to the park. You would have to read into this sentence to assume I won't go to the park if it isn't sunny (no clouds in sight). Mayb

How come they didn't use 'will' over 'would'?

2. If the action were to occur at that point in time it WOULD be in the past.

Now ---- some action (winning a million dollars) --X-- dependent action (buying a new house)

I think that explains also why WILL is not used.

Hello Jack

I've expanded the passage a little, to bring out the sense:

1. Option A is for a router to keep a list of all computers and all the paths to them.

2. If option A were taken, the router would then decide how to forward data packets based on this reference table and packets would be forwarded based on the IP address of the destination computer.
