would rather/would prefer

Hi! I have a question regarding these constructions used in the past. When it comes to 'would rather' we can say eg. I'd rather we had found another flat. (meaning: unfortunately, we didn't find it and now we must live here). What about 'would prefer'? How can we write such a sentence? Should I say: I would have preferred ...?
