"Would rather" in the past

Hi, everybody. I'm writing a short story and was wondering if I could use "would rather" in the past tense, for example:

He sat down on the couch. He'd much rather watch TV than go out with George.

Could someone tell me if this is correct? Thanks.

Yes, you can use "would rather" in the past (indicating a preference in the past), but you need to put the rest of the sentence in the past tense. So: He sat down on the couch. He would much rather have watched TV than gone out with George.
