Hi everybody,

1) Despite the heat, he wouldn't take his coat off.

2) What is the tense of 'would' in the above sentence?

3) Could you please write its (#1) equivalent sentence so that I can better understand, please?

In this case the wouldn't (would not) is past tense. If it was present tense it would be:

Despite the heat, he won't take his coat off.
(Despite the heat, he will not take his coat off.)

The meaning of the sentence is as follows:

Although it was very hot, he did not take off his coat

or

I see this as the won't (present) and wouldn't (past) of refusal.
