Would have wanted/expected

His parents are dead. They too live in the same city.

I think both of the following are fine. I mean he could say either of the following sentences.

I am not sure.

1.They would have wanted me to live in this city.

2.They would have expected me to live in this city.

................................................................................................................................................................................................

There is an exception if his parents asked him to live in this city even after their death.

Then the following sentences are correct.

3.They wanted me to live in this city OR They have asked me to live in this city.

If they all lived there before, then these are OK:

1.They would have wanted me to remain in this city.

2.They would have expected me to remain in this city.

3.They wanted/expected me to remain in this city.

Let us say you live in London/Tokyo or some other city.

I like this city.

I like to live in this city.

Both of the above are fine.

What is wrong with the verb 'live' in the following sentences?

Something has gone astray. I am not so good at manupulating some aspects when writing here.

I did use the underscore function to highlight the word remain.

However, it has disappeared! Very strange!


So I will rewrite the sentences.

If you do not live in the city or did not when they died, then use 'live'.

If you already live there or lived there, use 'remain'.
