would have studied/will have studied

Hi Please help me with this:

By 2018 linguists will have studied or will have been studying nearly 80 of the literature of this language.

I think either can fit here. But, is there any context pertaining to future (2018) when we can use would have studied?

Top answer

It's possible, in a conditional sentence of the third level. If you had started your college career last year, you would have studied enough to have your license by 2018.

I think I understand the idea.
Even here would have studied, that is, the action is pertaining to past only, Am I right?

The progressive future perfect does not make sense here.

By 2018, linguists will have studied nearly 80 percent of the literature written in this language.

You can use the future progressive, but relative to a period of time, not a point in time.
