Grammar

would have never expected or would never have expected

Hi,

Which one is correct?

'' I would have never expected him to win the game'' or

'' I would never have expcted him to win the game''

I am suddenly confused about this, don't know why.

Thanks

and any reason as to why?

"have expected" - the tense
The placement of "never" is more natural after the first verb.

Both are correct. I prefer the second word order, although I would have never … sounds natural enough to me.

The position of the adverb in English syntax is flexible. These are all possible, but the third is most common.

Never (in a million years) would I have expected him to win the game.
I would have never expected him to win the game.
I never would have expected him to win the game.
