WOULD HAVE HI,?

Hi,

I find in a text the next sentence

He then treathened that if Michelangelo did not "finish the ceiling quickly he would have him thrown down from the scaffolding

Although I get the meaning of the sentence I don't understand why they used the word HIM.

I'm spanish speaker I hope you understand my question.

What I mean is, welcome to English Forums.

I don't know who "he" is, but the "him" refers to Michelangelo.

If Michelangelo didn't finish quickly, this person would see that Michelangelo was thrown off the scaffolding. (Not a very nice way to encourage your artist!)

Well I do understand the general meaning of the sentence, but why is the word HIM there,
that's reported speech so if they had used directed speech how had they wrote the sentence:

He (the pope) thretened Michelangelo: "If you don´t finish quickly I will have you threw down the scaffolding". <------------- Is that right?

We use "have + object + past participle" to say that we arrange for somebody else to do something for us. It is called "causative form", if I remember correctly.

Example:

He repaired his car. (= He did it himself)
He had his car repaired. (= He asked someone to repair his car)

In your sentence:
he would have him (Michelangelo) thrown
