Can these two work interchangeably?

If we had had to figure out/ in order to figure out who stole it, one of us would have had to be watching/ would have had to watch the whole night. That's why none of us was interested in staying up.


I guess, they can be used interchangeably, because here the two options don't make much difference in the sense.
