How can we use ‘it would have to’ in both cases?
1. It is good that company chose this path now; otherwise it would have had to take
. Both refer to the future; # 1 does not refer to the past ('could have happened') at all, since the 'choice' in the first clause is 'now',placing 'the future' in the second clause in the real future. .
