Would have been Vs. Would be

A lot of us thought he would have been fired a long time ago.

Vs.

A lot of us thought he would be fired a long time ago.


I have seen the first sentence in newspaper and I am pretty sure my sentence is correct. What is the exact difference in meaning? Please help me clear my confusion. Thank you in advance.
