Would have

Someone asked me something that I don't know about.

I replied.

If I had known I would not have asked.

Now "I wouldn't have asked" means here If I knew I would tell you. You didn't need to ask please explain the part it's confusing on whether it's "you didn't need to ask me" I am confused ????

This does not make sense. "If I had known, I would not have asked" would be said by the person asking, not the person who is asked.
