"would happen"here is correct?Using only "happen" would be wrong?

Just to add to the post above, 'that' is often dropped -- at least in casual speech.

"In the event of something happening to him" is also grammatically possible and uses 'of'.

And in case anyone is wondering if the subject of the gerund "happening" should be possessive (the event of something's happening), it should not be.
