This is the first time people have been confused about a sentence I have written even though I see nothing wrong with it.

Sample Sentence: You would move into a house that had a previous occupant.

Many people told me that the sentence implied that the occupant is still there.

I don't know if I'd call it implication, but you can take the sentence to mean that. I would use "had had" to avoid any misunderstanding.
