'would' for the past

Next question
While I was reading "The Last Song" I noticed that Nicholas Sparks often use "would" for the past.
What does that mean?
I only know "used to", but I reckon it's similar.
If it is, how does it work? I mean ... would + infinitive? or what else? Is there a continuous?
And what would be the difference between 'used to' and 'would' for the past then?

Thank you all that you are willing to help!! Great forum!
