Would for past

I had a great time in the Greek Islands. We would rent a small boat and go fishing every day.

The above sentences come from Advanced Language Practice by Michael Vince. The key says that the second sentence should read

We rented a small boat and went fishing every day.

Why is it so?

The would in this case is something that sneaks into casual English, in place of "used to". I try to keep students from using it, because it is often confusing when dealing with conditional sentences. I think that your key is correct, but many people will disagree with me.
