Would for expressing the repeated action of inanimate things in the past

Can we use "would" to express the repeated action or habitual action of subjects that are inanimate things?

Like below

Paintings would often be commissioned by the wealthy, and, they would be hung in the home.

If the above sentence is correct, could you please make some examples as well?

Top answer

fire1 Paintings would often be commissioned by the wealthy, and, they would be hung in the home. This sentence is correct in its use of "would". The comma after "and" should be removed.

  • fire1 Paintings would often be commissioned by the wealthy, and, they would be hung in the home.
  • This sentence is correct in its use of "would".
  • The comma after "and" should be removed.
  • It is questionable how far it "express[es] the repeated action or habitual action of subjects that are inanimate things".
  • Although the inanimate things are grammatically the subjects, because the verbs are passive, and the agents are human, the sense is more that we are actually describing repeated/habitual actions of people.
