Would--conditional sentences

I thought we weren't meant to use would in the 'if clause' of a conditional... Can someone explain why it's ok here, please?

I don't know if we would expect to see him tonight.

Thanks

This is not conditional as it stands. The conditional is implied: I don't know if we would expect to see him tonight ( if he were coming at all / if I may express my opinion / if he were invited / et c)
