Would be or were

At first I thought, this book were about animals OR
At first I thought, this book would be about animals OR
At first I thought, this book be about animals. OR
At first I thought, this book is about animals.

I think, the first sentence is correct, but I'm not sure. Your help would be(?) very much appreciated.

Yes. will be is also possible, but it is a bit stiffer and colder. would be seems more friendly and polite.

Are you sure that I can say would be?
As far as I know only:
I thought this book was about animals is correct, since would is only used in if clauses or sentences like "I wouldn't do that" or in reported speach replacing the "will".
Since you have so many posts in this forum I guess I'm wrong. Could you please tell me where my mistake is?

Also, I saw a sentence

It works for reporting thoughts as well. In fact, the sequence of tenses is the same for any pattern like this.

I think this book is about animals.
I thought this book was about animals.

I think this book will be about animals.

A thinks: "It's not necassary to tell him that."

She thought that it was not necassary to tell him that.

B: "Why did you think that it was not necassary to tell me that?"

Is that correct?
