Grammar

Would be easier

Trump says he thought being president would be easier
I read the above headline in the Time of India.
What is the grammatical form and meaning of "would" and "easier"?
Can we replace "easier" with "easy" without changing the intended meaning?

Thanks

Let's see what went in Trump's mind before becoming president: "Being president will be easy."

But now, after becoming president, he realizes that it's not as easy as he thought-- he expected something easier.
