Would as past

Hello!

Here's a question: can I use "would" to say something in the past? If I can, what's the diference between a sentence using the simple past and other using "would"?

I went to that ice cream shop on the corner last week.

I would go to that ice cream shop on the corner every afternoon after school.

Actually, I don't have more pairs, at least not now. I asked about "would" because it's an old doubt. I heard once in a podcast someone saying something like the sentences you used in the examples, than I asked some friends (who are english teachers!) and my professors (I study english at university! And one of the professors I asked a

And yet, I bet if you asked them to talk about their childhood summer, they would use (conditional would there) that use of "would" for habitual past without speaking about it.

Sure! It can be used like "used to".

Every year we [used to / would] go to Grandma's for Thanksgiving dinner.


And it can be used as the future of the past, similar to "was going to".

Because of his talent for numbers, his teachers could see that he [was going to / would]
