would and past tense

If I am not wrong , would is used to talk about past habits and imaginary things etc

However , I see that would is used to talk about past events just like past tense

For example : What would you do yesterday ?

I generally see this pattern in movies and TV shows

Can you enlighten me ?

I find that hard to believe. "would" is not used to state that an event has occurred at a particular point in the past.
