"would" and "might"

So I was reading this book, and there was this part of a dialogue: He said, “The worse part is knowing what would have been.” " What might have been.” I sighed So I am just wondering what is the difference between these two sentences. The key words here are obviously "would" and "might".. Are they both modals? Thanks!

Yes.
"What might have been" has a little more baggage. The line is often found in sentimental songs and poetry. (We all sigh!)

"Knowing what would have been" is more ominous. To me, it implies a high likelihood that the result would have obtained had the condition been met.
